You Bought a Honda. Why Does It Still Cost So Much?

The Fix: How to Budget Like a Procurement Pro
I learned the hard way over about 200 generator-related orders (give or take, I'd have to check the system). Here's what I do now:
- Calculate TCO from the start. Take the purchase price + add 50-70% for installation, fuel, and first-year maintenance. That's your real cost.
- Budget for a 'maintenance fund' of 10% of purchase price annually. That covers oil changes, spark plugs (like the Stihl MS271 type—just kidding, but seriously, a good spark plug matters), and potential repairs.
- Negotiate the service package. When you buy, ask for the first service kit for free. Most dealers will include it if you ask. (Put another way: the first year of maintenance is usually negotiable.)
- Install the transfer switch before you buy the generator. Not ideal, I know. But it forces you to understand the electrical needs and prevents panic purchases.
My experience is based on mid-range orders—7-15kW units for commercial use. If you're working with smaller portable models or larger industrial units, your experience might differ. But the principle holds: the hidden costs are there, regardless of size.
