The Call That Started This
It was 3:47 on a Friday in March 2024 when the phone rang. A project manager needed temporary power on site by Monday morning. She wasn't sure what wattage — the site coordinator had said "think big" — so she asked for a 500 kW diesel generator. She also asked whether we stocked Generac fuel filters (we don't; more on that in a minute), and whether her crew could just fall back on an older Honda EU2000i portable generator that had been sitting in storage since last year. She'd never tested it.
I take a version of this call a dozen times a year. In my role coordinating emergency generator deliveries for contractors, event planners, and facility managers, I've handled 200+ rush orders in six years. 1. Sizing is a guess, not a calculation
Most buyers focus on max wattage and completely miss what's actually going to be plugged in. The question everyone asks is "what's the biggest one you have?" The question they should ask is "what's the smallest one that covers my worst case?"
There's a reason everyone defaults to heavy iron. When the clock is running, a bigger machine feels safer. But an oversized generator has its own failure modes. Run a 15,000 watt unit at 1,500 watts and it's operating at a sliver of its rated load. Diesel units will wet-stack — that's a real term — which means unburned fuel coats the exhaust and the engine slowly chokes on its own inefficiency. It shows up as black smoke and a loping idle. It's ugly, gradual, and completely preventable.
Undersizing is the quieter killer. A Honda EU2000i portable generator delivers 1,600 rated watts and peaks at 2,000. That's a fridge, a few lights, and a charging station. It is not a 15,000 BTU AC plus a water heater plus a pump that starts with a 5x surge. When the compressor kicks in, voltage sags, motors whine, and any device with a circuit board starts making decisions you don't want it to make.
2. Parts are not universal
Every week, someone asks whether our Honda parts will fit another brand. A Generac fuel filter is designed around Generac's fuel system — thread pitch, micron rating, flow rate. A Honda generator filter is designed around Honda's. Neither is "just a filter." Each is a component with specifications that matter.
The call I still remember: a contractor insisted a Generac filter would work in a Honda because "a filter is a filter." The seal didn't seat, fuel misted onto the engine cradle, and we lost half a day and a client's patience to save $30. That was an expensive $30. The customer, to his credit, later told us: "if it doesn't fit, don't force it." It's become a running phrase around the shop.
This isn't a "buy genuine" sales pitch. It's a compatibility reality. The right filter is the one designed for the machine you own. For a Generac, genuine Generac parts are right. For a Honda, genuine Honda parts are right. Forcing either in the wrong place ends the same way.
3. Nobody verifies before they trust

That tells you something: most people about to depend on a generator don't know how to confirm it's producing the voltage their equipment expects. They plug in, cross their fingers, and ream someone out when it doesn't work.
I understand why. The assumption is that a generator that starts is producing correct power. The reality is that a generator can start, idle, and still deliver 108 volts or 132 volts into a circuit that expects 120 — and you won't notice until a $4,000 component fails in a puff of smoke. The machines almost always work. The assumptions are what fail.
The Real Price of the Wrong Answer
The true cost is rarely the machine. It's everything that happens after.
Overbuying is its own trap
A 500 kW diesel generator is serious iron. Rental packages in that class typically run $2,000 to $4,000 a day before fuel, delivery, and a technician who knows how to operate it (as of January 2025; rates vary seriously by region). If your real load is 30 amps at a job trailer, you're paying a semi to deliver a scooter.
And here's where I'll lose any credibility by not being a "yes" vendor: Honda doesn't make a 500 kW diesel. If a client genuinely needs three-phase power at that scale for a week, the honest move is to say so and point them to rental houses that specialize in that market. Those companies have the equipment, the load banks, and the operators. We'll help scope the requirement and make sure the client asks the right questions. What we won't do is pretend to be a vendor we're not. A vendor who says "this isn't our strength — here's who does it better" is giving you information you can act on.
Underbuying damages more than budgets
Motor loads are unforgiving. A compressor, pump, or fan can draw 3-5x its running watts for a fraction of a second at startup. A fridge rated at 600 watts can surge past 2,000. A sump pump rated at 1,100 can spike above 2,300. Put two of those on a 2,000-watt inverter and you're betting on luck. And luck is not a power management strategy.
Last summer, a client almost signed off on a single EU2000i for a demo booth running a fridge, two monitors, and a small espresso machine. Our tech pushed back and got them a pair in parallel, then made them test under load before the show opened. The second unit kicked in right on cue when the fridge surged. Had they discovered that at 2 PM in front of 300 people, it wouldn't have been a conversation. It would have been a scene. (Thankfully, they listened.)

The 10-Minute Check That Changes Everything
Here's what we do — and what I'd tell anyone inside a 48-hour deadline.
Step 1: List the loads. Then add 25%.
Write down everything that will run at the same time. Get running watts from each nameplate. Add them up. For anything with a motor, multiply its running watts by 3 for the surge number. Take the total and add a 25% buffer. That's the generator you need — not the one that's on sale, not the one with the cool decal.
For a typical crew trailer — lights, microwave, fridge, laptop dock, radio — you're looking at 1,500 to 2,000 continuous watts. That's squarely in Honda EU2000i portable generator territory, or the EU22i if you want the extra headroom. Neither is glamorous. Both are right.
Step 2: Pick the right Honda, not a bigger one
The EU2000i is the workhorse. It's lighter, it's proven, and it's a hell of a value. The Honda generator EU22i (sold in North America as the EU2200i) is its newer sibling: about 10% more max output (2,200W vs 2,000W), a carbon-monoxide sensor as standard, and quieter partial-load numbers in Honda's published specs (accessed January 2025 — check the current model year, because specs do change). Both are parallel-capable, so you can start with one and add a second when the job grows.
Every week, someone forwards us an EU22i review and asks, "is it this good?" Yes, it's that good — but only if it fits your load. For straightforward EU22i product info, the spec sheet tells you what matters: output, runtime, noise, and the CO sensor. Reviews are useful for reliability impressions, not for sizing decisions. The honest answer to "which is better?" is: whichever fits the load. The EU22i's CO sensor is the one feature we'd insist on if a unit might run near a tent, a doorway, or any semi-enclosed space. That alone is worth the upgrade for event work.
Step 3: Match the part to the machine
Honda? Honda genuine filters and spark plugs. Generac? Generac genuine. No one brand of fuel filter is "premium enough" to override engineering. A correct part is the one that fits, seals, and flows as designed.
Step 4: How to check for voltage with a multimeter
Ten minutes the first time. No, wait — ten minutes the first time if you're reading the manual. Two minutes once you've done it once.
- Set your multimeter to AC voltage (V~). If it has manual ranges, choose 200V.
- Start the generator and let it warm up for a minute.
- Plug the black lead into the COM port; plug the red lead into the VΩmA port.
- Insert the black probe into the wide slot (neutral) and the red probe into the narrow slot (hot) of a 120V receptacle.
- Read the display. You want 114 to 126 volts — Range A under ANSI C84.1, the standard for utilization voltage.
- Now add a load — a shop light, a heater, something real. If voltage sags hard under load, you have a problem. If it stays in range, you're good.
- For a 240V outlet, probe across the two hot terminals and look for 228 to 252 volts.
Outside those ranges? Stop. Don't connect anything until someone qualified figures out why.
The Generator Was Never the Emergency
During triage, there's always a temptation to skip the math and grab the biggest thing we can load. I've made that mistake. The rough calls are the ones where nobody verified the load, nobody verified the part fit, and nobody verified the voltage.
Next time someone says "think big," ask them what's actually running. Do the two-minute check. And when the honest answer is a Honda generator in the 1kW to 14kW range — that's our lane. When the honest answer is a 500 kW diesel, call a specialist who rents that class of gear, and walk in with your load list and your voltage expectations written down. You'll be the most prepared customer they've had all year.
That's the whole secret. And it's a lot cheaper than the emergency version of learning it.
