Assuming there’s a single model that works for everyone. There isn’t. Scenario A: The Quiet, Clean-Power Mobile Setup (Inverter Models like EU7000is)
Who this is for
You’re running sensitive electronics, working at remote job sites, camping, or tailgating. You need power that’s clean (low THD), reasonably quiet, and portable. The Honda EU series – especially the EU7000is – is the benchmark.
My experience (including mistakes)
In 2021 I recommended an EU7000is to a contractor who needed backup for his van-mounted network equipment. He loved the sound level (58 dBA – quiet enough to hold a conversation next to it) and the fuel efficiency (up to 18 hours on a 5.1-gallon tank at 25% load). But I forgot one thing: he regularly worked at 8,000 ft elevation. The carbureted engine struggled. Honda offers a high-altitude kit (part number 16010-ZW2-301), but I hadn’t mentioned it. Honda’s “battery generator” products (like the Honda Power Equipment eGX or the portable battery pack options) are relatively new. They’re essentially inverter generators with a built-in battery that can run appliances without the engine running for a few hours. The battery recharges from the generator engine when needed.
My take (with a reality check)
Honestly? I’ve only worked with two of these units. My experience is based on about 30 service calls for battery-related issues, not hundreds. So grain of salt here. The idea is great: you get near-silent power for a couple of hours, then the gas engine kicks in to recharge. But the battery adds weight and cost. For a typical weekend camper, the premium might not be worth it. However, if you’re running a CPAP machine all night or keeping a fridge cold while you sleep, the battery mode is a game-changer.
A mistake I witnessed: a customer bought the EU2200i Companion (which has a battery start but no large integrated pack) and expected it to run his AC for 8 hours without the engine. It can’t. Fuel system note for hybrid units
The battery generator still has a gas engine. The fuel filter (if equipped) is similar to the portable units. On the Kubota RTV 900 utility vehicle – which sometimes carries generators – I’ve seen fuel pump failures that mimic a clogged filter. The RTV 900 uses an electric fuel pump (part 16700-43830). If the pump dies, the generator won’t get fuel regardless of the filter. How to tell the difference: After cranking, check if fuel flows to the carburetor. Disconnect the fuel line at the carb and crank; if no fuel spurts, the pump or filter is the issue. Then disconnect the line from the pump inlet; if fuel comes from the tank (gravity-fed), the pump is bad. I’ve replaced three RTV 900 pumps in my shop – they’re about $120 each.
Scenario C: Heavy-Duty Standby or Construction Power (Non-Inverter Models like EB5000, EM6500)
Who this is for
You need maximum wattage per dollar, you don’t mind a bit more noise, and your loads aren’t sensitive (motors, lights, power tools). These models are legendary for reliability but they produce “dirty” power (5–10% THD) and are louder than the inverter series.
Pitfall I’ve documented
In 2023, a customer bought an EM6500 for his home standby. He saved $400 compared to an EU7000is. Then he tried to run his new LED TV. The distorted sine wave burned out the power supply after three months. Total repair: $250. Plus he had to buy a line conditioner ($150). Net “savings”: exactly zero. Here’s my honest limitation: I often recommend non-inverter models for purely resistive loads (water pumps, compressors, heaters) but not for electronics. If you’ve got any sensitive equipment, either upgrade to an inverter model or use a quality surge suppressor with built-in filter. Fuel filter issues on these models
The EB5000 uses a sediment cup with a screen. It’s simple: remove the cup, clean the screen, reassemble. But the screen can clog with water and sediment if the fuel is old. How to unclog: Turn off the fuel valve, unscrew the bowl (it’s plastic or metal). Clean the screen with a brush and fresh gas, then wipe the bowl. If the bowl is cracked (happened to me once – overtightened it), replacements are about $15. Avoid using Teflon tape on the threads; it can break off and jam the float valve.
How to Know Which Scenario Is Yours
Here’s a quick checklist I use with clients:
- Are you powering laptops, phones, or TV? → You need an inverter model (Scenario A or B).
- Do you need silent operation for sleep? → Consider battery-integrated (Scenario B) plus a small inverter generator.
- Is your job site at high altitude (>5,000 ft)? → Ask about high-altitude kit. The EU7000is has one, but not all models do.
- Do you own a Kubota RTV 900 or similar? → Make sure the fuel pump is working before blaming the generator.”
- Are you on a tight budget and only running power tools? → The EM/EB series will probably serve you fine.
