Choosing the Right Honda Generator: A Cost Controller's Guide to EU2200, EU3000is, and Whole-Building Backup

Over the past six years of managing equipment purchases for a mid-sized electrical contracting company, I've learned that “best generator” is a pretty meaningless phrase. The right unit for a crew running two impact drivers and a reciprocating saw is not the right unit for a workshop keeping a well pump and a freezer alive overnight. And neither of those is the right unit for backing up a 400-amp commercial building.

We run Honda generators almost exclusively, and I have the spreadsheets to prove why. It's not because they're the cheapest—they're not. It's because when I calculate total cost per running hour across our fleet, the Hondas win. Every time. But even within Honda's lineup, the answer depends entirely on what you're powering, how often, and what happens when it fails.

Scenario A: Portable Job-Site Power — Honda Generator EU2200i

If you need power for handheld tools, lighting, and small compressors across different job sites, the Honda generator EU2200i is the unit we put in every service truck now. Four years ago, we made the switch after one too many mornings wrestling with a 70-pound “contractor special” that started only when it felt like it.

The EU2200i weighs around 47 pounds. One person can load it. The inverter technology keeps the noise low enough to talk over, and the fuel efficiency matters more than most people realize: Honda rates it at roughly 8.1 hours on a 3.6-litre tank at 25% load. But there's something I wish someone had told me when we bought our first EU3000is: the battery will die. It's not an if—it's a when. These units sit in truck beds, go through freezers and heat waves, and then get demanded to start on a moment's notice. The factory battery is adequate but not exactly heavy-duty. Around the two-year mark, we noticed cranking getting sluggish. One morning in a client's parking lot, the electric start just clicked. The crew pull-started it—which is workable but not pleasant in a hurry.

Here's what I did next. I searched the part number and found that a replacement battery for a Honda EU3000is generator costs roughly $30 to $50 depending on the brand. Testing the Battery Yourself with a Multimeter

I know a multimeter is one more thing to keep in the truck. I also know a tow bill and a half-day of lost productivity costs more than a decent Fluke. Numbers don't lie.

Scenario C: Whole-Building Backup — Transfer Switches and the 400-Amp Question

Here's where I have to be direct: a portable generator is not a whole-building solution. If your facility needs to keep HVAC, servers, lighting, and security systems running through an extended outage, you're looking at a different class of equipment.

The jump from “a few circuits” to “whole building” is large. It's not just about the generator—it's about the electrical infrastructure, starting with the transfer switch. If you have a 400 amp service, you need a 400 amp Generac transfer switch (or the equivalent from another reputable manufacturer) that matches the service rating exactly. Not a 200 amp, not “whatever the electrician has in the van.” The switch must match the service and, in most jurisdictions, be installed under permit by a licensed electrician. Don't skip that. I know a business owner who did, and when his insurance company found the unpermitted work, the conversation was not pleasant.

Generac's automatic transfer switches are well regarded in this segment, which is why we've spec'd them in several installations. I'm mentioning the brand because it comes up constantly in our quotes—not to push you toward it. Pair it with whatever generator satisfies your load calc.

One thing I've never fully understood: why transfer switch installations can cost twice as much from one electrician to the next. The labor and permit rates in our area vary wildly. My best advice is to get at least three itemized quotes for the electrical work, not just the box price. The $500 difference between those quotes is the real line item that matters.

How to Know Which Scenario You're In

It comes down to three questions:

  1. What's your load? Add up the running watts of everything you'll run simultaneously. Remember that motors can draw two to three times their running wattage at start. Under 2,000 running watts? The EU2200i is likely enough. Up to about 2,800 watts with surge headroom? The EU3000is is the sweet spot. Above that, you're in standby territory.
  2. How often will you use it? A generator that sits in quarantine until one emergency a year has a different cost profile than a unit that runs weekly. If it's rare, rental might beat purchase. If it's weekly, you want Honda-level reliability and fuel economy from day one.
  3. What's the consequence of failure? If the answer is “discomfort,” size down. If the answer is “a lost contract” or “damaged inventory,” size up. The generator is almost always cheaper than the consequence it prevents.
“People think the purchase price is the conversation. It's not. Price per running hour, over the life of the unit, is the only number that actually matters.”

That was a dealer's line when he talked me through our first Honda purchase. I dismissed it as sales talk. It took me three years and about 50 tracked orders to understand he was right. Now I set up every generator quote in a TCO spreadsheet—purchase price, fuel, maintenance, battery replacement, resale value, downtime risk. It's not glamorous, but it has saved us thousands.

One more thing: Honda's published specs are conservative, not optimistic. Per FTC advertising guidelines (ftc.gov), claims about runtime and output have to be substantiated, so you can reasonably trust the spec sheet. That's more than I can say for some budget brands we tested early on, whose “rated wattage” seemed to exist only in their marketing department.

Whether you're running a two-man crew or managing a facility with serious backup needs, the right Honda generator is the one that matches your load, use frequency, and the cost of getting it wrong. That's the whole trick. Know your numbers before you compare price tags.
